‘Don’t always have the refs, but…’ – Bayern Munich star fumes over Real Madrid defeat

A high-profile member of the first-team setup at Bayern Munich has late on Wednesday made clear his grievances with the standard of officiating in the club’s meeting with Real Madrid.

Bayern, of course, are fresh off being sent packing from the Champions League.

After making the trip to Spain for the 2nd leg of their semi-final showdown with the aforementioned Real Madrid, Thomas Tuchel’s troops were ultimately condemned to the wrong side of a 2-1 scoreline.

This came after Alphonso Davies’ brilliant opener was overturned by a brace on the part of super-sub Joselu.

And yet, with just minutes remaining in a pulsating finish at the Santiago Bernabéu, Bayern were left feeling more than aggrieved.

This came upon a nod-down into the hosts’ penalty area being lashed home in style by Matthijs de Ligt.

The referee’s whistle, however, had already blown for offside, before the Dutchman’s effort rippled the net.

As much came after the linesman raised his flag to indicate as much a split second earlier.

Replays, though, showcased the fact that the call was an extremely tight one, meaning the correct practice would have been for the linesman to keep his flag down, allowing the play to finish out, before sending the offside decision to VAR.

And, safe to say, one of Bayern’s stars was in altogether unforgiving mood on the back of the full-time whistle.

Speaking to the media at the Bernabéu post-match, Matthijs de Ligt, whose effort was the one ruled out, did not hold back in stating:

“I don’t want to say that Real Madrid always has the referees with them… but that’s what made the difference today.”
