Details: Xabi Alonso’s explanation to Vinícius Jr. for benching vs Marseille

Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso explained to attacking star Vinícius Jr. precisely why he had been left out of his latest starting XI prior to kick-off.

That’s according to El Chiringuito TV, who have on Thursday provided an insight into the situation.

The name of wide-man Vinícius of course took its place front and centre in the headlines in Spain’s capital once more earlier this week.

Unfortunately for the Brazilian, though, as much was for less than positive reasons.

Amid something of a hit-and-miss opening to the new campaign, Vinícius was dropped to the bench for Real Madrid’s Champions League opener against Olympique Marseille.

Xabi Alonso instead opted for a frontline of Rodrygo, Kylian Mbappé, and Franco Mastantuono.

And Los Blancos’ headmaster explained to Vini ahead of kick-off at the Santiago Bernabéu precisely the reasoning behind his decision.

As per a report from El Chiringuito TV, Alonso passed the following message on to his no doubt frustrated winger:

“My reasoning isn’t based on merit, but rather on the need to give playing time to different players.”
