Chelsea set sights on Athletic Club’s Nico Williams

A key member of the attacking ranks at Athletic Club has been identified as a leading summer target on the part of Premier League giants Chelsea.

That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, citing English outlet The Telegraph, who have confirmed that the Blues have set their sights firmly on the signature of Nico Williams.

Amid an ongoing search for reinforcements out wide owing in large part to the struggles being endured by big-money signing Mykhailo Mudryk, Chelsea head coach Pochettino has earmarked Williams as the ideal addition.

The Spanish international was tipped for a winter move to another of the Premier League’s heavyweights, in the form of Arsenal, though a transfer, in the end, failed to materialise.

Williams, for his part, put pen to paper on a new contract with Athletic just last December, tying him down to the Basque outfit through the summer of 2027.

But the deal contains a release clause set at just €50 million, well within the reach of big-spending Chelsea.

One potential stumbling block in any move for the 21-year-old to Stamford Bridge, however, comes in the form of the future of the aforementioned Pochettino.

Chelsea’s headmaster is understood to be the driving force behind the Blues’ interest in Williams, but, amid the difficult campaign being endured by the Argentine, his presence in the dugout in west London cannot be guaranteed beyond the summer.
