Celta Vigo star admits to contract uncertainty: ‘I’ve been trying for years’

Celta Vigo star Óscar Mingueza has this week provided an update on his contract situation at the club.

This comes as the former Barcelona man inches ever closer to becoming a free agent.

Mingueza has of course long stood as one of the standout performers in Celta Vigo’s first-team ranks, enough to earn for the versatile defender a recall to the Spanish national team last season.

Ahead of the expiration of his contract terms in the summer of 2026, the assumption, in turn, was that those behind the scenes at Balaídos were doing their utmost to tie Mingueza down to a new deal.

If the latest comments on the part of the 26-year-old himself are anything to go by, however, then this in fact does not appear to be the case.

Speaking to the media this week, in quotes collected by Cadena SER, Mingueza explained:

“I have no idea. I’m focused on doing my best, but right now, there’s nothing. I’m fine here, I’m very comfortable. I’ve been trying for years to make it happen, but for one reason or another, it hasn’t happened. I don’t know what will happen. I’m very happy, very content, and eager to stay here.”
