An insight into the current left-back pecking order in La Liga giants Real Madrid’s first-team squad has on Thursday been provided.
The information comes courtesy of Diario AS, and confirms that previous first-choice Ferland Mendy has tumbled to third-choice in the plans of new boss Xabi Alonso.
Real Madrid of course added to their left-sided defensive options this past summer.
As much came by way of the big-money signing of Álvaro Carreras from Portuguese heavyweights Benfica.
The 22-year-old, in turn, has since gone on to make the left-back spot in Xabi Alonso’s XI his own, courtesy of a trio of fine performances to open the term.
Behind Carreras, though, who is considered 2nd choice?
The aforementioned Ferland Mendy has spent the early weeks of the new season sidelined through injury.
Even upon his return, though, the Frenchman could find game time altogether difficult to come by over the months ahead.
As per a report from AS:
‘(There are) three players at left-back and Mendy is the third in that lineup. Especially because, as usual, he’s injured.’
