Carlos Carvalhal pleased with progress at Celta Vigo

Celta Vigo’s winning streak was broken after their 1-0 defeat at home against Atlético Madrid. Head coach Carlos Carvalhal came out after the game in an interview that appeared on Marca.

The coach lamented the result which he believes didn’t reflect the reality on the pitch. “We played a great game. Oblak was simply better on the field… we were very good in our defensive organisation, and very good in offensive transitions.”

Atlético’s Slovenian goalkeeper returned to his best self, denying Celta’s forwards on multiple occasions. Most impressively, a dramatic goal-line save kept his team in the running.

Celta have undergone a restructuring, with many new signings over the summer such as Jörgen Strand Larsen and Óscar Mingueza arriving at the Galician club. Furthermore, the January window saw Benfica player Haris Seferovic arrive on loan.

“We’re closer to the team I would like. It’s a reality that we’re getting better,” said Carvalhal after the game. “We’re very competitive.”

The Portuguese coach also had some words about his newest signing. “[Seferovic] is a player who with passing weeks is going to enamour the fans. He’s been a fantastic acquisition.”
