Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeneß has on Tuesday turned heads across the world of football.
This comes after the German took aim at La Liga champions Barcelona in nothing short of ruthless fashion.
Hoeneß’ gripe comes owing to the Blaugrana’s long-standing financial woes, and questionable manoeuvres to balance the books.
The Camp Nou brass have of course long seen their practices called into question, which at one point last season even culminated in two of the club’s first-team stars being unavailable for selection in La Liga.
Speaking during an appearance on the OMR podcast (as cited by COPE) this week, Bayern icon and board member Hoeneß therefore refused to bite his tongue.
Drawn on Barcelona’s monetary situation, the German explained:
“Barcelona are not the model I envision for myself. In any other country, they wouldn’t even be playing in the first division. When you have debt worth €1.3 billion, how is that supposed to succeed? Honestly, it’s incomprehensible how they’re still playing in the first division at all.”
