Barcelona’s Marc-André ter Stegen misses out as Athletic Club star clinches Zamora trophy

The race for this season’s edition of the Zamora Trophy this evening officially came to a close.

As much came by way of developments in Athletic Club’s final day La Liga meeting with Rayo Vallecano.

Athletic no.1 Unai Simón headed into proceedings at the Estadio de Vallecas in the knowledge that an eventual clean sheet would see him guaranteed the Zamora award – handed out to the goalkeeper with the best goals conceded-to-games ratio across the La Liga season.

On the other hand, in the case of Rayo netting past him, Barcelona’s Marc-André ter Stegen would have remained in the fight heading into the Blaugrana’s final day meeting with Sevilla on Sunday.

When all was said and done on Saturday evening, though, Simón got the job done.

Hooked on the hour-mark with his clean sheet intact, the Spanish international’s place in the record books was secured.

As revealed in a post across Athletic Club’s social media platforms, Simón has become just the 5th player in the club’s storied history to bring home the Zamora Trophy.

Congratulations, Unai!
