Barcelona star’s nickname returns during Athletic Club clash

The affectionate nickname previously afforded to Barcelona star Gerard Martín by the club’s supporters has on Saturday come back to the fore online.

This comes owing to the Spaniard’s performance in the Blaugrana’s latest outing.

Barcelona are of course currently locked in action on the domestic front, in a La Liga meeting with former manager Ernesto Valverde’s Athletic Club.

The aforementioned Gerard Martín was for his part afforded a starting berth for the evening, slotting into an unfamiliar centre-back role.

Safe to say, however, that the full-back has not looked at all out of place at the heart of Barca’s backline…

Stout in his defensive duties and solid in possession, the 23-year-old has thus far proven himself a real option as a central defender for manager Hansi Flick moving forward.

And as alluded to above, such efforts have not gone at all unappreciated on the part of Barcelona’s fans.

Lavishing praise on Martín, the Blaugrana faithful have re-dubbed their side’s stopper ‘Gerard Maldini’, after AC Milan and Italy legend Paolo, widely considered one of the best defenders to ever play the game.
