The hopes of Barcelona star Lamine Yamal of lifting this year’s Ballon d’Or award were on Wednesday night dealt a blow.
This came owing to developments in the Club World Cup showdown between Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain.
Luis Enrique’s all-conquering PSG are fresh off another dominant victory yesterday evening, after putting four past Real Madrid without reply.
Playing a starring role in as much was frontman Ousmane Dembélé, who racked up a goal and an assist early on at MetLife Stadium.
Their latest triumph means that PSG now need only overcome Premier League giants Chelsea, to secure glory at the newly-formatted Club World Cup.
And if this does ultimately prove to be the case, the Ballon d’Or hopes of the aforementioned Lamine will be dealt a fatal blow.
Dembélé is now considered the clear favourite to lift this year’s ‘Golden Ball’, with a victory for PSG over Chelsea this weekend likely to bring a close to the race once and for all.
