Barcelona star set to return for Newcastle clash

La Liga giants Barcelona are expected to welcome a leading member of the club’s midfield ranks back from injury for their upcoming Champions League opener.

The player in question? Frenkie de Jong.

Dutch international De Jong was for his part forced to watch on from the stands on Sunday night, as Barcelona made short work of Valencia.

This came with the 28-year-old having been ruled out of the clash through injury.

De Jong picked up a muscular problem whilst on international duty with the Netherlands earlier this month.

He has in turn spent the time since working towards a return to the pitch as soon as possible.

And if the latest word stemming from Catalunya’s capital on Monday is anything to go by, then as much is likely to come later this week.

De Jong took full part in training alongside the rest of Hansi Flick’s squad on Monday.

The former Ajax man is therefore expected to be given the medical green light to feature in Barcelona’s European season opener against Newcastle United on Thursday night.
