A member of the first-team ranks at Barcelona has revealed that he was the recipient of a personal gift on the part of club president Joan Laporta following the Blaugrana’s La Liga title win last season.
The player in question? Wojciech Szczęsny.
Shot-stopper Szczęsny of course played a leading role in Barcelona wrestling back Spanish football supremacy from arch rivals Real Madrid last season.
After coming out of retirement to act as an emergency backup option in Hansi Flick’s squad, the Pole quickly took over no.1 duties in Catalunya’s capital.
A string of standout performances followed, culminating in an eventual domestic treble for the Blaugrana.
And as alluded to above, this week, Szczęsny has provided an insight into one reward afforded to him for his part in as much.
Speaking during an interview with ‘Sportpl’, as cited by Diario Sport, the 35-year-old explained:
“That cigar in the dressing room is a good summary of the whole story. The smoke made me say goodbye to Arsenal, the smoke accompanied me for many years, and in the end, Jooan Laporta, gave me a very good cigar. I lit it in the dressing room, watching with satisfaction how all my teammates celebrated the Spanish league title… It was a moment of incredible satisfaction for me, and it ties this film perfectly with my career.”
