A member of the midfield ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona has this week been tipped for what would be a surprise move to England, with Chelsea.
This comes amid the understanding that the Stamford Bridge brass have set their sights on the signature of Frenkie de Jong.
Midfielder De Jong is for his part closing on an imminent return to the pitch. After suffering a serious knee injury whilst on international duty at this summer’s World Cup, the 29-year-old has spent recent weeks ramping up his comeback efforts.
The problem for De Jong, however, is that upon his return, he will be forced to compete for minutes at the base of Barcelona’s midfield with none other than Rodri.
With as much in mind, some of European football’s leading clubs are understood to be keeping a close eye on the situation of the former Ajax man with a view to the future.
And as alluded to above, late this week, a new suitor have been added to the fray in the Spanish media.
As per a report from Fichajes, citing Diario Sport, amid an ongoing search for reinforcements in the middle of the park for the 2nd half of the season:
‘Chelsea are closely monitoring Frenkie de Jong’s situation. The Blues desperately need to sign a midfielder in the winter transfer window after losing Enzo Fernández and failing to make any signings, and the Dutch international has emerged as a potential target.’
