Barcelona star Robert Lewandowski has admitted that he was handed the unenviable task of limiting the impact of a Blaugrana teammate on international duty on Thursday.
The player in question? Frenkie de Jong.
Lewandowski and De Jong locked horns in a World Cup qualifier yesterday evening, between Poland and the Netherlands.
When all was said and done, the nations cancelled each other out, en route to an eventual 1-1 draw.
Frontman Lewandowski for his part featured for a little bit over an hour on the evening.
And speaking to the media post-match, the 37-year-old revealed that manager Jan Urban personally tasked him with keeping tabs on Frenkie de Jong, in an effort to keep the latter’s effectiveness to a minimum:
“I was tasked with stopping my teammate De Jong, and because I know him from training, I knew I couldn’t let him run with the ball, because then it would be difficult to stop him and the whole team.”
