Barcelona star has taken on a leader’s role since Iñigo Martínez departure

A member of the goalkeeper ranks at La Liga champions Barcelona has taken on an increasingly prominent role in the dressing room over recent weeks.

That’s according to Diario Sport, who point towards Wojciech Szczęsny as the player in question.

Shot-stopper Szczęsny has of course lost his first-choice status between the posts in Barcelona’s squad this season.

As much comes after the Blaugrana splashed out on the signature of Espanyol standout Joan García over the summer.

Despite being well aware of this situation, the Pole made the call to extend his contract over the summer, agreeing to a backup role.

And as alluded to above, if the latest word stemming from the media this week is anything to go by, then Szczęsny seems to be managing to prove himself important despite his lack of minutes on the pitch.

As per a report from Sport:

‘The figure of the former Juventus player has gained in ascendancy in the dugout. Szczęsny has become an important piece for Flick to create communion in the dressing room and help in the ‘tutelage’ of the youngsters. With the departure of Iñigo Martínez, in addition, Wojciech’s experience is an added value.’
