Barcelona star explains his nickname

Barcelona youngster Pedro Fernández has on Tuesday provided an insight into the origin behind his nickname, ‘Dro’.

Midfielder Dro is for his part fresh off an evening to remember on Tuesday.

This comes after the starlet, at just 17, was afforded his first-ever Champions League start in a meeting with Olympiacos.

When all was said and done in the fixture, Barcelona emerged on the right side of a 6-1 result.

And ‘Dro’ – widely considered a future star in the making in Catalunya’s capital – marked his appearance with a fine assist for teammate Fermín López.

Speaking during his post-match interview, the Spaniard was in turn drawn on a whole host of topics.

And one response laid out has since piqued widespread attentions amongst those of a Barcelona persuasion.

Asked about his ‘Dro’ nickname, the attacking midfielder/winger explained:

“People think there’s some special meaning behind it, but it’s actually simple. When I was a baby, my older brother couldn’t pronounce “Pedro,” so he called me “Dro.” The name just stuck, especially since there were three players named Pedro when I joined Barça — it helped tell us apart. And honestly, I’ve grown to really like it (laughs).”
