Barcelona star confirms that he has been permanently moved to new position

Barcelona star Gerard Martín has admitted that he now considers himself to be a full-time central defender. That is to say, he no longer expects to take to the pitch at left-back.

Stopper Martín of course proved himself to be one of the stories of the season last time out in Catalunya’s capital. Gaining increasing prominence in the defensive ranks of boss Hansi Flick, the Spaniard was tasked with covering in a central role owing to a personnel crisis.

And safe to say, Martín has since not looked back…

All told, the 24-year-old went on to rack up 50 appearances across all competitions in 2025/26, establishing himself as one of Barcelona’s most important, and reliable players from his new berth at the heart of defence.

Speaking to Mundo Deportivo this week, Martín was therefore asked if he considers his change of position to be a permanent one.

And the former Cornellà talent went on to confirm:

“At first, my mind was torn between the two positions because I kept switching, but now I’m set on centre-back. I think I had a very good year, although I can always improve.”
