Barcelona star admits ‘I am a backup and will remain so’

A member of the goalkeeper ranks at La Liga champions Barcelona has this week reiterated that he will at no point in the near future be in contention to wrestle back starter status.

The player in question? Wojciech Szczęsny.

Shot-stopper Szczęsny has of course found himself demoted to no.2 in Hansi Flick’s Barcelona squad across the season to date.

As much comes after the summer arrival of Joan García from Espanyol.

Szczęsny can for his part be left feeling somewhat hard done by in Catalunya’s capital, after shining en route to the Blaugrana’s domestic treble last season.

Safe to say, however, that the Pole has not taken the situation at all to heart.

Drawn on his backup status during an exchange with the media this week, Szczęsny proved classy as ever with his response, explaining:

“I am backup to Joan García, and will remain so. My role is to prepare him for the biggest matches. He’s already one of the best goalkeepers in Europe, but I want to prepare him for the highest level. I will try to help him.”
