Barcelona reach verbal agreement over key contract renewal

The brass at La Liga giants Barcelona have reached an agreement on the terms of a contract renewal with a key member of the club’s squad.

That’s according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, who points towards Frenkie de Jong as the player in question.

Those behind the scenes at the Camp Nou have long been hard at work in efforts to tie midfielder De Jong down for the long-term.

After the former Ajax man enjoyed something of a rebirth under the watch of Hansi Flick last season, Deco and co. quickly got to work to extend his terms beyond their current expiration in the summer of 2026.

With such excellence on the part of the player having carried into the early weeks of the new campaign, De Jong’s renewal was in turn labelled as something of a priority.

And as alluded to above, this week, the Camp Nou brass appear to have put all of the necessary conditions in place to tie their engine room star down.

As per a report from the aforementioned Fabrizio Romano:

‘Barcelona are closing in on the agreement with Frenkie de Jong over new deal until June 2029. Verbal agreement in place, final formal details being sorted then all signed with lawyers on it. New deal already approved club side, as Carlos Monfort has reported.’
