Barcelona in Crisis: Consequences loom for finishing in 3rd-place

Barcelona’s squad has been put on notice: falling to finish the league in second place will have repercussions.

As per Diario AS, while the club has deferred any decisions until the end of the season, insiders label anything short of securing second place and qualifying for the Supercopa as a “failure“. Currently, they assert, “anything is possible.”

The defeat to Girona at Montilivi has been as detrimental, if not more so, than previous setbacks against PSG or in El Clásico at the Bernabéu. The solemn expressions of major club figures exiting the stadium, led by Joan Laporta and followed by Deco, already hint at the scale of the catastrophe.

The 4-2 loss not only signified losing dominance in Catalan football – it’s been over 80 years since a Catalan club finished above Barcelona – but also relegated the Blaugrana to third place in La Liga, shutting the door on the Supercopa de España and its eight million euros in revenue.

According to sources at AS, all decisions at the club will be deferred until the end of the season, pending the squad’s ability to reverse the situation and secure second place.

Things are out of Barcelona’s control: they trail Girona by one point, are behind on goal difference and have four matches left. The fixture list doesn’t favour Xavi’s men either, facing Real Sociedad, Almería, Rayo Vallecano, and Sevilla, while Míchel’s team play Alavés, Villarreal, Valencia, and Granada.
