Barcelona identify surprise new ‘top choice’ for manager role

The powers that be at La Liga giants Barcelona have placed a new name atop their shortlist of targets to replace Xavi Hernández on the club’s bench this summer.

That’s according to The Independent, who have on Tuesday provided a fresh insight into developments behind the scenes in Catalunya’s capital.

They point towards the likes of previous frontrunners Hansi Flick and Roberto De Zerbi as having dropped down the target list of Deco and his Barcelona team of directors.

Instead, Ruben Amorim, it is claimed, has emerged as the new favourite for the role.

All of the Blaugrana, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich are understood to be keen on the services of Sporting CP’s highly-regarded headmaster with a view to next season.

With the latter pair, though, prioritising a move for Xabi Alonso for the time being, Barcelona are ready to take advantage.

The Spanish heavyweights, it is concluded, are ‘understood to be closer to the Sporting Lisbon coach than any of their major European rivals’.
