Barcelona handed clear path to first summer signing

La Liga giants Barcelona have this week been afforded a boost in their ongoing efforts to bring in Espanyol star Joan García.

This comes amid confirmation that a leading rival in the race for the signature of the 24-year-old have turned their attentions elsewhere.

The outfit in question? Newcastle United.

Alongside Barcelona, Newcastle are the one club to have been most persistently tipped as a potential summer landing spot for the aforementioned Joan.

With Espanyol understandably reluctant to sell to a direct city rival, the Magpies were even considered the favourites to strike a deal in the eyes of many.

As alluded to above, though, on Wednesday, Eddie Howe and co. have shifted their focus to another target.

As per Newcastle insider Craig Hope of the Daily Mail, as cited by Mundo Deportivo:

‘The Magpies have changed their target to strengthen their goalkeeping position and have now set their sights on Burnley’s 22-year-old goalkeeper, James Trafford.’

Barcelona, in turn, appear to have a clear path to Joan García’s signature.
