Barcelona funds blow as on-loan defender picks up serious injury

La Liga giants Barcelona have this weekend been dealt a potential blow on the monetary front.

This comes after a member of the club’s loan army picked up an injury which looks set to keep him sidelined long-term.

The player in question? Sergiño Dest.

Right-back Dest, for his part, is currently in the midst of a loan spell in the Netherlands, with Eredivisie heavyweights PSV Eindhoven.

The United States international has enjoyed a stellar campaign to date, establishing himself as a key member of PSV’s defensive ranks en route to imminent Eredivisie glory.

Speculation, in turn, had long pointed towards the brass at The Philips Stadion as preparing to activate their buy option on Dest, set at €10 million.

This weekend, however, such hopes on Barcelona’s part appear to have been thrown firmly up in the air.

This comes amid confirmation that the 23-year-old has suffered an injury, which could keep him out of action for the long-term.

As per an official statement across the website and social media platforms of PSV:

‘Sergiño Dest suffered an injury during Saturday’s training session. The duration of the absence is still being assessed. However, it’s almost certain that he will be out for an extended period.’

Early murmurs stemming from the Dutch press point towards Dest’s injury as potentially being serious enough to keep him on the sidelines until next year.

Should this prove to be the case, it is altogether unclear whether PSV would still be willing to make the defender’s stay a permanent one.
