Barcelona fans highlight Xavi’s Roberto mistake as reason for Copa del Rey exit

Barcelona’s supporters have flooded to social media late this evening, to take firm aim at head coach Xavi Hernández.

This comes after the Blaugrana saw their hopes of clinching silverware this season dealt what could prove to be a fatal blow.

Barca made the trip to San Sebastian a short time ago, eyeing a spot in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey at the expense of Athletic Club.

When all was said and done, however, it was the evening’s hosts who marched on, courtesy of an eventual 4-2 triumph.

After they could not be separated across 90 minutes, Athletic and Barca headed to extra time, with goals on the part of the Williams brothers – Iñaki and Nico – having proved decisive.

Ernesto Valverde’s men, as a result, march on to the Copa’s final four.

For Xavi and Barcelona, on the other hand, the inquest will now begin.

Eight points off the La Liga summit, and looking bereft of the quality to go all the way in the Champions League, the Catalans now look almost certain to finish out the campaign sans an all-important trophy.

The club’s fanbase, consequently, have made their frustrations crystal clear, with many having pointed the finger of blame squarely in the direction of their side’s headmaster.

Taking to social media in their droves, the Blaugrana faithful have highlighted Xavi’s decision to introduce Sergi Roberto for Pedri as tonight’s turning point, adamant that the substitution all but ended the game as a contest:
