Backup Barcelona star expected to start the club’s next three fixtures

A member of the defensive ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona is set to be cast into a prominent role in manager Hansi Flick’s XI on the far side of the international break.

That’s according to Diario Sport, who point towards Gerard Martín as the player in question.

Left-back Martín is for his part fresh off making his season bow in Barca colours this past weekend.

After finally being registered for La Liga play, the 23-year-old was introduced off the bench, en route to the Blaugrana’s 1-1 draw with Rayo Vallecano.

And as alluded to above, if the latest word stemming from the Spanish media is anything to go by, Martín can look forward to playing an altogether more prominent part over the weeks ahead.

Barcelona were of course dealt a blow on the personnel front on Thursday, upon word surfacing that Alejandro Balde has suffered an injury setback.

And as per a report from Sport, with as much in mind:

‘Gerard Martín aims to be in Flick’s eleven at least against Valencia, Newcastle and Getafe.’
