Çağlar Söyüncü is on the verge of officially completing his move to Atlético Madrid. The 27-year-old is already in Madrid to complete the rest of the formalities before starting preseason with his new team-mates at the end of the week.
“I’m happy, very excited to play for a club as big as Atlético Madrid,” he said at Barajas airport in Madrid in words reported by AS.
The plan is for the centre-back to undergo a medical on Wednesday, and then sign his contract until 2027, followed by the official announcement.
The Turkish international arrives on a free transfer, after his contract with Leicester came to an end. And the defender is looking forward to this new adventure. “I’m very happy with the welcome. I hope we have a good season and achieve the team’s objectives. It will be difficult, but I’m used to challenges, I’m prepared and I hope everything goes well.”
When it becomes official on Wednesday, Söyüncü will become the third Turkish player in Atlético’s history, after Arda Turan (2011-15) and Emre (2012-13).
The defender will start preseason with the Atlético squad on Friday except for those who played with their national teams in June. Those players will return to training on Monday 10 July.
