Atlético Madrid equal Real Madrid record during Barcelona clash

Diego Simeone’s Atlético Madrid have on Thursday secured for themselves a piece of club history.

This comes owing to their exploits in the club’s latest outing.

Atlético are of course currently locked in action on the domestic front, in a Copa del Rey meeting with Hansi Flick’s Barcelona.

And as things stand, the Rojiblancos find themselves headed towards an absolutely dominant first leg win.

After a rip roaring opening 45 minutes, Simeone’s hosts lead by four goals to nil late in proceedings in Spain’s capital.

And owing to this advantage, Atlético have secured for themselves a place in the record books of Spanish football.

As per a report from statisticians Opta, released across social media on Thursday evening:

‘Barcelona have conceded 4 goals at halftime for only the second time since at least the 2004/05 season. The other occasion was in the Champions League in August 2020, vs Bayern Munich, winning 2-8 in the quarterfinals.’
