Atlético Madrid are inching towards a deal for a member of the midfield ranks at La Liga rivals Real Betis.
That’s according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, who points towards Johnny Cardoso as the player closing on a move to Spain’s capital.
The name of American international Cardoso has long proven a prominent one in the Spanish media headlines.
This comes after widespread confirmation was forthcoming that, amid a search for reinforcements in the middle of the park, Atlético Madrid had earmarked the 23-year-old as the ideal profile.
Despite Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur boasting right of first refusal on Cardoso owing to the terms of Giovani Lo Celso’s move to Real Betis last summer, the Atléti brass have moved forward with a concerted push to bring the Verdiblancos standout in.
And if the latest word stemming from the press on Thursday is anything to go by, then Diego Simeone and co. now appear closer than ever to landing their man.

‘Atlético Madrid have reached an agreement with Johnny Cardoso on personal terms and advancing in talks to get deal done with Real Betis. Package deal around €30m with bonuses and also potential players as part of the agreement now being discussed.’
