Aston Villa close to finalising deal for Philippe Coutinho

Fabrizio Romano reports that Aston Villa are working on signing Philippe Coutinho on a permanent deal from FC Barcelona.

Villa still have to finalise the Brazilian’s payment terms. On Tuesday, Coutinho, who had an unsuccessful spell at Barcelona, featured for Villa against his former club Liverpool in the Premier League.

Coutinho signed for Barça in January 2018 for €120 million plus add-ons of €40 million. His buy-out clause was set at €400 million.

In the 2018-19 campaign, the attacking midfielder did not perform as well as in his first season and joined Bayern Munich on loan for the 2019-20 season. In Germany, he won the Bundesliga, the German Cup and the Champions League, scoring twice in Bayern’s 8-2 win over Barça in the quarter-final.

In the summer of 2020, he returned to Barça but struggled in the 2020-21 season and in the first part of the current campaign, which has led to him joining Villa on loan in January.
