As reported by Marca, Barcelona Femení player and Spain International Aitana Bonmatí won the Women’s Ballon d’Or for the first time at Monday night’s award ceremony in Paris. She became the second women’s Spanish player to win the award, along with Alexia Putellas.
The award marks an outstanding campaign in which she won a treble with her club team, Barcelona, being the MVP in the Champions League, as well as lifting the World Cup trophy with Spain, where she was equally voted best player.
The central midfielder succeded her club team-mate Putellas, who has won the award on the previous two occasions, continuing the dominance of women’s Spanish football.
Upon receiving the trophy, Bonmatí said, “I am very happy to receive this Ballon d’Or,” and added, “As players, our responsibility is to continue fighting for a world of peace and equality for all.”
