Iñaki Williams’ 251-game run with Athletic Club comes to an end

Marca reports that due to injury, Iñaki Williams was ruled out of Athletic Club’s 1-0 defeat to Celta Vigo on Sunday.

This normally mundane fact is particularly special in relation to the Athletic forward, as until now he hadn’t missed a league game since 17 April 2016.

Holding the record for the most consecutive La Liga games, Williams had featured in an incredible 251 matches in a row. The last game Athletic played without the Ghana international was a 1-0 victory over Málaga.

Thursday’s Copa del Rey clash against Valencia saw Iñaki come off in the 88th minute with a muscular problem which he didn’t manage to recover from in time for the trip to Vigo. His younger brother, Nico Williams, scored in the victory against Valencia at Mestalla.

Iñaki hoped to reach 300 consecutive games, but even though his run has been broken, he has set an impressive record that will surely stand for years to come.
