Xavi provides İlkay Gündoğan injury update after Barcelona’s win over Alavés

Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernández has this evening provided an insight into the wellbeing of midfield star İlkay Gündoğan.

This of course comes after the German international set pulses racing across the Barcelona fanbase on Saturday.

The Blaugrana marked their return to action a short time ago, making the trip to the Estadio Mendizorrotza for a La Liga meeting with Alavés.

When all was said and done, Xavi and co. made it two wins on the trot, courtesy of an eventual 3-1 triumph.

The aforementioned Gündoğan, meanwhile, played a central role, notching a goal and assist amid a masterful display in the middle of the park.

In turn, it came as a major source of concern when, early in the 2nd half, the German international went to ground, with what appeared to be a fitness concern.

Taking no chances, the Barca coaching staff quickly hooked him from the action, replaced by the later-dismissed Vitor Roque.

Speaking to the media post-match, it therefore came as little surprise when the subject of Gündoğan’s wellbeing was put to his head coach.

And, in a boost for all associated with the Catalans, Xavi went on to reveal that, in fact, the former Manchester City man has not suffered an injury.

“There are no injuries today,” the Spaniard began. “Gündogan had a knock on his back, but it’s nothing.”

Xavi added:

“I replaced Pedri because he was tired. I brought in Fermín to provide a little more legs to the team.”
