Speaking ahead of Barcelona’s trip to Athletic Club on Thursday, Xavi spoke about the situation involving Ousmane Dembélé and the club.
“We are in a complex, difficult situation. The club has taken the decision that if he does not renew, a solution will be sought. We have been in talks with the player and his agent for five months. We can’t wait any longer. Either he renews or we look for a solution. He wants to renew but the decision has not been made. The player should also be thinking about the team and the club,” Xavi told reporters.
Dembélé’s contract at the club expires this summer and despite reports suggesting that the winger wants to stay at Camp Nou, the sides have yet to reach an agreement on a new deal. If he is to leave, Barcelona will look to sell the player this month instead of losing him on a free in the summer.
Xavi then added that sending Dembélé to the stands is not a solution.
“That is not something that I am contemplating. Either he renews or we look for an exit. It is one thing or the other.”
