With Sergi Roberto’s contract up, Barcelona now have a new captain

La Liga giants Barcelona have, on Monday, overseen a change in captaincy in the club’s first-team squad.

That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, who have provided an insight into the latest developments behind the scenes in Catalunya’s capital.

As of today, July 1st, a whole host of players across the continent now find themselves out of contract with their respective clubs.

One such player comes at the aforementioned Barcelona, in the form of Sergi Roberto.

Versatile midfielder Roberto is awaiting an update from the Camp Nou brass regarding his future, hopeful of Barca’s financial situation improving to the point that a fresh one-year renewal can be agreed between the parties.

As things stand, however, he is no longer a Blaugrana player.

And as much, of course, also means that he has for the time being surrendered the captain’s armband in Hansi Flick’s squad.

So, who is next in line?

As per the aforementioned MD, in line to take over from Roberto as Barcelona captain is shot-stopper Marc-André ter Stegen.

The German international stood as the vice-captain in Catalunya this past season, meaning Roberto’s exit has opened the door for Ter Stegen to take on the prestigious role of leader in the Camp Nou dressing room.
