Why the stats favour Barcelona to knock PSG out of the Champions League

A round of head-turning statistics have come to the fore on Tuesday, surrounding the impending showdown between Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.

And those of a Blaugrana persuasion will no doubt be delighted to hear that, if history is anything to go by, they should be considered heavy favourites to march on to the semi-finals of the Champions League.

As revealed by Maria Garrido of BBC Sport, Barcelona have emerged victorious from an away first leg in the competition’s knockout rounds on 13 occasions in the past.

And on each of these 13 occasions, the Catalans have finished out the job to advance to the next stage.

PSG, on the other hand, have never managed to recover, after losing the opener of a Champions League knockout tie in France’s capital.

With Barca, of course, having condemned Luis Enrique’s troops to the wrong side of a 3-2 result at the Parc des Princes last week, history is certainly on the side of Xavi and co, with a view to the return leg at Montjuïc later tonight.
