Major news was revealed on Monday morning with regard to Real Madrid’s participation in FIFA’s newly formatted Club World Cup tournament.
As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Carlo Ancelotti revealed that his side will be rejecting the invitation to play in the revamped tournament, which will be taking place in the United States next summer.
The main reason for the decision is a financial one, as Ancelotti has said that FIFA are only offering the club €20 million to participate.
Ancelotti said, “Just one single Real Madrid match is worth €20m and they want to give us that money for the whole competition… no way. Negative.”
It will be interesting to see the fallout which will take place in response to the Madrid club’s decision, and whether FIFA will shift payouts to get the club to play or whether they will stick to their guns.
Ancelotti’s bold prediction is that other clubs will follow suit with a refusal to play. Is FIFA’s brand-new tournament doomed before it has even begun?
