Marco Asensio’s time at Real Madrid coming to an end – why does he want to leave?

Marco Asensio will leave Real Madrid at the end of the season. According to Relevo, the Spaniard has taken the decision to reject Madrid’s offer to sign a new deal. Jorge Mendes, his agent, and José Ángel Sánchez, Madrid’s general manager, have been in talks since December to extend the Spaniard’s contract, but he will now opt to join a new club.

The reasons for his departure are strictly sporting, although he has been free to sign for any team since 1 January. Asensio has waited for Real Madrid until the end because his plan was to stay; he wanted to see if Carlo Ancelotti’s words would come to fruition as the Italian coach has always told him that he is a key player. However, he hasn’t featured as he would have liked on the big days. Asensio was a substitute in all the Champions League knockout games and also in the Copa del Rey semi-final and final.

The Spain international has had a few offers on the table and has not yet decided on his destination, as he wanted to make the decision whether or not to stay at the Bernabéu without being influenced by offers from abroad. Several big clubs in Italy and England have been knocking on his door in recent months. PSG also wanted to sign him in January. In the next few weeks, he will sit down to evaluate the offers he has and decide which club he will sign for.

Real Madrid have made two renewal offers to Asensio. They made him one during the 2022 World Cup and just over a month ago they sent him another one with improved conditions with bonuses for the performances he has had this season (12 goals and eight assists). The club raised his current salary slightly and gave him the freedom to sign a long-term contract, with his choice of the number of years.

Asensio, 27, has not felt important in the decisive period of the season and his time at Madrid is coming to an end.
