Why Manchester City are ‘relieved’ by Kylian Mbappé joining Real Madrid

An insight into the surprise reaction of the powers that be at Premier League champions Manchester City to news of Kylian Mbappé’s impending move to Real Madrid has been provided on Thursday.

It is of course now common knowledge that frontman Mbappé is all set to take his talents to Spain, to complete a long-awaited move to Real Madrid this summer.

As much comes after the France international, last month, came to the definitive decision not to renew his expiring terms with Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Negotiations, in turn, have long been kicked into gear between Mbappé’s entourage, and the brass at the Santiago Bernabéu.

And, should all go according to plan in talks, an official announcement regarding a pre-contract agreement between the parties could arrive as early as this month.

News of as much has been met with understandable concern on the part of top clubs across Europe, with the prospect of one of world football’s standout players linking up with an already star-studded squad under the watch of Carlo Ancelotti in Madrid a scary one to say the least.

And yet, as alluded to above, one member of the continent’s elite who have actually been left ‘relieved’ by Mbappé’s decision to take his talents to Madrid comes in the form of Manchester City.

Speaking in an interview with RMC Sport on Thursday, French football insider Julien Laurens was inevitably asked for the latest on the chatter surrounding the country’s national team captain preparing for a new adventure.

And, in his response, Laurens revealed that, owing chiefly to the knock-on effect on the future of Erling Haaland, Champions League holders Man City have been left in positive mood by Real’s successful swoop:

“At Manchester City, they are quite relieved by the fact that Kylian is going to Madrid because that closes the door, for now, to a departure or for Haaland, or an approach from Real Madrid.”
