An explanation for the absence of Julián Alvarez from Atlético Madrid’s matchday squad on Sunday has come to the fore online. This comes amid confirmation that the Argentine is dealing with a fitness concern.
Diego Simeone’s troops are primed to return to action later this evening, making the trip to Anoeta for a La Liga meeting with Real Sociedad.
Fresh off his first start of the new season at Anfield against Liverpool in midweek, the aforementioned Julián Alvarez was widely expected to be in from the off once again in San Sebastián.
Upon Atlético’s travelling squad for the fixture being unveiled, however, the 26-year-old was nowhere to be seen. And an explanation for as much has since been forthcoming.
As per a report from journalist Fabrizio Romano:
‘Julián Álvarez, out for Atlético Madrid today and not even travelling with the squad. Decision due to muscular overload in yesterday’s training session.’
“With the relevant tests carried out, the medical staff have ruled out Julián’s presence in today’s game.”
