Why Alphonso Davies would not take one of Real Madrid’s non-EU player slots

A fresh development in Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies’ long-rumoured transfer to Real Madrid has been forthcoming in the media late this afternoon.

It is of course common knowledge across the world of football that defender Davies has been identified as the prime target of those in a position of power at Real Madrid with a view to the summer.

Amid the collective agreement that fresh blood is needed at left-back, the Canadian has been earmarked as the perfect addition, for present and future alike.

Recent word stemming from the media, meanwhile, has pointed towards the move looking an increasingly feasible one, as Davies continues to stall over signing a new contract in Munich.

And, if the latest update surrounding the situation on Saturday is anything to go by, yet another key factor has emerged, in the favour of Real.

The info comes courtesy of Diario AS, who have revealed that, in the case of a transfer bearing fruit, Davies would not take up one of the permitted non-EU slots in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad.

Los Blancos currently boast three available slots for players from outside of the European Union, but with Endrick set to fill one this summer, Davies’ prospective arrival was expected to reduce this number to one.

This, however, would in fact not prove the case.

Owing to his dual-nationality between Canada and Liberia, the 23-year-old is in possession of a valuable Cotonou passport.

As much would open the door for Davies to become a community citizen in Spain, in yet another boost for Real Madrid.
