When could the La Liga season finish?

La Liga and the Spanish Footballers’ Association (AFE) are working together to plan how to complete the La Liga 2019-20 season. The idea is to introduce a 10-15 day period of ‘pre-season’ before resuming for match-day 28.

There are three options in order to play out the remainder of the 2019-20 campaign.

  1. Restart in mid-May. Returning to action in mid-May would require playing until either June 30 or July 15. There are 11 match-days remaining. This would mean teams playing matches every three days. These games would take place whether there are fans in the stadiums or not.
  2. Restart the season in the middle of the summer. This calendar would mean the league would go on until August or September.
  3. Restart in September. This is perhaps the most realistic open for the decision-makers. It would mean the 2020-21 season would have to be rescheduled.

La Liga takes a break over the Christmas and New Year holidays, but this tradition may be scrapped next season in order to schedule more fixtures due to a potential late start for the 2020-21 campaign.
