La Liga and the Spanish Footballers’ Association (AFE) are working together to plan how to complete the La Liga 2019-20 season. The idea is to introduce a 10-15 day period of ‘pre-season’ before resuming for match-day 28.
There are three options in order to play out the remainder of the 2019-20 campaign.
- Restart in mid-May. Returning to action in mid-May would require playing until either June 30 or July 15. There are 11 match-days remaining. This would mean teams playing matches every three days. These games would take place whether there are fans in the stadiums or not.
- Restart the season in the middle of the summer. This calendar would mean the league would go on until August or September.
- Restart in September. This is perhaps the most realistic open for the decision-makers. It would mean the 2020-21 season would have to be rescheduled.
La Liga takes a break over the Christmas and New Year holidays, but this tradition may be scrapped next season in order to schedule more fixtures due to a potential late start for the 2020-21 campaign.
