Large sections of the Atlético Madrid fanbase in attendance at the club’s meeting with Villarreal on Sunday made use of the opportunity to send a crystal clear message the way of star frontman Julián Alvarez.
This of course comes amid the ongoing speculation linking the Argentine with an imminent move away from Spain’s capital.
Alvarez has for his part long made clear his intention to bring a close to his time in the red and white stripes of Atlético this summer. Wanted by La Liga rivals Barcelona, the 26-year-old appears nothing short of desperate to secure a Camp Nou switch before the window slams shut.
The Atléti brass have remained adamant throughout the saga that Alvarez will be going nowhere over the coming weeks, with the former Manchester City man having therefore linked back up with Diego Simeone’s squad for the opening weeks of the La Liga season.
On Sunday, the Rojiblancos have been pitted against Villarreal, in a clash between 3rd and 4th from last season in Spain’s top-flight.
And as alluded to above, ahead of kick-off, the home crowd inside the Metropolitano made sure that Alvarez was fully aware of their feelings towards him as things stand.
Upon the attacker’s name being announced to the stadium, the response was a loud chorus of boos and whistles:
Conor Laird – GSFN
