Villarreal: Ins, outs and possible starting XI for 2022-23 season

The Yellow Submarine have made three acquisitions at the time of writing, heading into the 2022-23 season.

Villarreal’s headline signing of the summer has been forward José Luis Morales from Levante. Following the Granotas’ relegation to the Segunda División, club legend Morales joined Villarreal on a two-year deal.

A major shake-up has taken place between the sticks. Sergio Asenjo returned to Real Valladolid after a nine-year stint at La Cerámica, with veteran shot-stopper Pepe Reina joining from Lazio. Club legend Mario Gaspar left for EFL Championship side Watford, but Villarreal got their own right-back from the Hornets in the €1m signing of Kiko Femenía.

Rubén Peña and Vicente Iborra have also left, while Argentine Giovani Lo Celso returned to Tottenham following the end of his loan spell. Moi Gómez also left in a €2 million deal to Osasuna.

Villarreal could also end up selling talented Yéremy Pino, with reported interest coming from the Premier League for the Spain international.

Ins: José Luis Morales (Levante), José Manuel Reina (Lazio), Kiko Femenía (Watford).

Outs: Moi Gómez, Sergio Asenjo, Mario Gaspar, Rubén Peña, Xavi Quintilla, Vicente Iborra, Serge Aurier, Giovani Lo Celso.

Players returning from loan spells: Jorge Cuenca, Manu Morlanes, Fer Niño, Javi Ontiveros, Álex Baena.

Possible starting XI for the 2022-23 season:
