Quique Setién is under contract at Villarreal until 2024, but the La Liga club have already contacted Rayo Vallecano head coach Andoni Iraola, according to Relevo.
Girona boss Míchel is also on their shortlist if things don’t work out with Setién. Both coaches are of interest because of their attacking styles, leadership skills, and man-management.
Setién still has time to earn the right to finish his contract at La Cerámica but the fact that the club have been in talks with Iraola does not bode well for his future.
The Rayo boss was previously linked with a move to Leeds United, but the Yorkshire club eventually appointed Javi Gracia.
To stay on at Villarreal, Setién may have to win the Conference League – a title that would qualify Villarreal for the Europa League next season.
Qualification for the Champions League, via La Liga, would also possibly help him secure another season at the club. Villarreal are currently sixth in the table.
