Unai Emery: “It was a match in which we respected the opponent and the competition.”

Villarreal defeated Austria Wien 1-0 in the fourth round of the Europa Conference League group stages, allowing them to go top of their group.

In his post-match interview that appeared on Marca, Unai Emery expressed his satisfaction with the performance of his team:

“It was a match in which we respected the opponent and the competition. They changed their tactical plan, but we adapted to it by not leaving them space and by not letting them run behind our defence. We had two good chances in the first half and in the second half they pushed a little more, but we scored the winning goal.”

“We are top of the group with a 100% win record and with a firm footing in Europe. It is true that it gives us the option of getting through without having to play our strongest team,” he added.

He also gave an update on his injured players:

“We’ll see what Coquelin has and how Kiko recovers. Foyth and Gerard are close to recovery. Players are coming in and out. Mandi has been good at fullback, he started his career in that position.”
