Tottenham Hotspur unclear over Gareth Bale’s future

The Times report that Tottenham Hotspur may not extend Gareth Bale’s loan deal for a second season.

Bale’s contract at Real Madrid runs until 2022, however, he has fallen out of favour under Zinedine Zidane and previous reports suggested that the Welshman would prefer a second season at Spurs instead of a return to the Spanish capital.

Bale’s return to London hasn’t gone as planned, with injuries keeping him out of Jose Mourinho’s side. Former Real Madrid left-back Sergio Reguilón has enjoyed his start to life at Spurs, assisting Harry Kane’s header in their 1-1 draw with Fulham on Wednesday night.

Since returning to Tottenham, Bale has played just 116 minutes in the Premier League. Mourinho has used him more frequently in the Europa League. Exercising the purchase option for Bale now appears complicated and a return to Real Madrid may be the most likely move at the end of the season.

Bale’s agent, Jonathan Barnett, previously admitted that there is a possibility of Bale extending his stay in north London beyond the 2020-21 season if things go well.
