‘The Pedri case…’ – Barcelona boss Xavi sends warning to RFEF over Pau Cubarsí

Barcelona head coach Xavi today urged caution on the part of the Spanish Football Federation, when it comes to their plans for youngster Pau Cubarsí.

This, of course, comes amid mounting speculation surrounding La Roja’s summer plans for the breakthrough Barca defender.

Just last night, Mundo Deportivo reported once more that Cubarsí is in line to be called up for not only the summer Olympic Games, but, in all likelihood, the European Championships, too.

This is a similar path to that taken by Blaugrana teammate Pedri back in 2021, a summer from which, in the opinion of many at the Camp Nou, the midfielder never truly recovered from a fitness standpoint.

Speaking to the media on Saturday, it therefore came as little surprise when the subject of Cubarsí’s potential double summoning on the international front was put to the aforementioned Xavi.

And though he was quick to admit that the young stopper ‘deserves’ to be plying his trade with Spain, Barcelona’s headmaster also pleaded with the RFEF to ensure that the infamous ‘Pedri case’ is not repeated with Cubarsí:

“It is not something I can decide,” Xavi began, as cited by Diario Sport. “But I hope that the ‘Pedri case’ is not repeated. He deserves to go with the national team, he is at a high level. We must also value [Spanish manager] De la Fuente’s bravery.”
