‘The most important in our history’ – Girona boss Míchel hails Stuani after Betis win

Girona head coach Míchel has this evening moved to lavish praise on frontman Cristhian Stuani.

As much comes fresh off another cameo to remember for the veteran, on Sunday.

Girona marked their post-international break return to action a short time ago, welcoming Real Betis to Catalunya for a La Liga clash.

The Blanquivermells headed into proceedings eyeing a return to winning ways, after heading into the break fresh off two defeats in three.

And, when all was said and done at the Estadi Montilivi, secure all three points is precisely what Girona managed.

After Artem Dovbyk and Willian José traded doubles, the aforementioned Stuani proved himself the hero, courtesy of the game’s winner deep into injury-time.

This means that Girona, for the time being at least, have opened up a nine-point advantage over 4th-placed Athletic Club in the La Liga table.

The club’s Champions League dream, in turn, looks firmly back on track.

And, as alluded to above, post-match on Sunday evening, the Catalan outfit’s head coach couldn’t help but reveal his delight for match-winner Stuani.

Speaking in his latest press conference, as cited by Mundo Deportivo, Míchel labelled the 37-year-old the most significant player in the club’s history, before also confirming his intention to afford Stuani the captain’s armband in Girona’s first-ever European fixture next season:

“Cristhian is the most important player in the club’s history and he continues to prove it. He deserves everything that is happening to him and Stuani will wear the armband in the first game in Girona’s history in Europe.”
