Talks between Barcelona and Frenkie de Jong over the Dutchman’s contract at a standstill

Barcelona and Frenkie de Jong are yet to arrive at a deal that would see the Dutchman reduce his salary.

De Jong’s contract renewal in 2020 made the 25-year-old one of the highest earners at the club. According to AS, the midfielder will end up costing €42m for the Blaugrana. Throughout the summer, Barcelona tried to convince the player and his agents to take a salary cut in the interest of the club without much success.

Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United were keen on taking De Jong off Barça’s hands, but the Dutchman wanted to stay and the Red Devils opted to sign Casemiro instead, who had a cheaper price tag.

Negotiations have come to a standstill and do not appear to be progressing any time soon. With Xavi eager to sign Bernardo Silva from Manchester City in 2023, the Catalan side will most likely make another attempt in January to offload De Jong and lower the club’s wage bill.
