Spain train without Gavi

Spain trained in 32-degree heat on Monday without midfielder Gavi, according to Spanish outlet AS. Twenty-five players took the field, all except the Barcelona player who did not train with the squad as a precaution after suffering a knock against Germany.

The 18-year-old is, however, expected to be ready for Thursday, when Spain take on Japan in Group E.

Gavi, who is a key part of Luis Enrique’s starting eleven, was left recovering in the gym after completing the full game against Costa Rica and another sixty minutes against Germany in the 1-1 draw on Sunday.

Luis Enrique’s preferred midfield three is Gavi, Pedri and Sergio Busquets, and now he has the problem of Gavi’s knock and Busquets’ yellow card. Busquets is one card away from suspension.

The Asturian coach will have to have a plan B for the match that will close the group stage. Atlético Madrid captain Koke is his first option.
